It is bordered to the south by Ewaso Nyiro River, which separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve.<br \/>\nThe reserve covers an area of 165 Km\u00b2 and is located around 345Km from Nairobi.<br \/>\nThe reserve is located in the semi-arid ecological zone-V, the days are extremely hot will the nights are cool.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5074\" src=\"https:\/\/www.silverbirdsafari-africa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/OIP-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Reserve is rich in wildlife with fame for abundance in rare northern specialist species such as the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx (Also referred as Samburu Special). <a href=\"https:\/\/silverbirdsafari-africa.com\/display.php?package_s=74\">The reserve<\/a> is also popular with a minimum of 900 elephants. Large predators such as the Lion, Leopard and Cheetah are an important attraction (Kamunyak the Miracle Lioness that adapted the baby Oryx is a resident in the reserve).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5075\" src=\"https:\/\/www.silverbirdsafari-africa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/OIP-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"305\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wild dog sightings are also a common attraction to this unique protected area. Birdlife is abundant with over 450 species recorded. Birds of the arid northern bush country are augmented by a number of riverine forest species. Lesser Kestrel and the Taita Falcon are species of global conservation concern and they both utilize the reserve. \u00a0Five species categorized as vulnerable have recorded in the reserve. These are African Darter, Great Egret, White-headed Vulture, Martial Eagle and the Yellow-billed Ox-pecker. Critically endangered species under CITIES \u2013 Pancake tortoise(<em>malacochersus tornieri<\/em>) is found in the reserve.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5076\" src=\"https:\/\/www.silverbirdsafari-africa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/OIP-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"319\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Other reserves include <a href=\"https:\/\/silverbirdsafari-africa.com\/display.php?package=52\">Shaba National Reserve<\/a> with its great rocky kopjes (isolated hills), natural springs and doum palms, is more physically beautiful than the nearby national reserves of\u00a0Samburu\u00a0and\u00a0Buffalo Springs.
